The program, cosponsored by the School Library Media Services Office of the Department of Education and the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME), began in 1983. The purpose of the SSYRA Program is to encourage students to read independently for personal satisfaction, based on interest rather than reading level. Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation.

At Timberlin Creek, 3rd 4th and 5th grade students earn incentives for participating.

3 Books Read – students vote in April for their favorite book
5 Books Read – students earn a first level prize
10 Books Read – students earn a second prize and are eligible to tryout for the Battle of the Books team
15 Books Read – students earn a reading medal

Students may tryout for the Battle of the Books team in January if they have read at least ten books. The Battle of the Books team consists of five players and two alternates. The team travels to a nearby location to compete and test their knowledge against other elementary schools in St. Johns County.

CLICK HERE for a summary of each SSYRA book

Sunshine State Young Readers Award 2022-2023 The Sunshine State Young Reader’s Award (SSYRA) Program is a statewide reading program for students.
